Can you switch broadband provider and keep your router?

Most businesses stay with a broadband provider they are not happy with for one reason: they assume switching means an engineer, a new router, downtime and someone retyping settings nobody can find. Usually none of that is true. Here is what actually changes, and the one thing that genuinely decides whether your existing router can stay.

The short version

On a straight provider takeover, where the underlying connection stays the same, nothing has to change inside your router. We take services over on the same wholesale platform, so the broadband username and password carry over unchanged. Nobody has to log into the router, hunt for a password from 2019, or retype anything.

What decides whether your router survives is not the provider. It is the type of connection, because different connection types physically arrive in a different socket.

How broadband arrives, and which port it uses

There are two families, and the difference is a physical one you can see on the back of the router.

An RJ11 is the small connector you associate with a telephone cable. An RJ45 is the wider connector on a normal network cable. They are not interchangeable, and that single fact explains most router questions on a switch.

When your existing router is fine

If the connection type is not changing, the router almost always stays exactly where it is:

  • Changing provider on the same product, for example FTTC to FTTC, or full fibre to full fibre. Same socket, same cable, and with the credentials carried over, no configuration change either.
  • FTTC moving to SOGEA. Physically identical, still the DSL port on the same copper pair. The line simply loses its analogue voice service.
  • Full fibre to a leased line. Both hand off over Ethernet into an RJ45 WAN port, so a business router with a spare WAN port copes.
  • Speed upgrades within the same product, which are a change at the exchange, not at your desk.

In these cases a takeover is a background job. Your kit keeps running and, done properly, the changeover is measured in minutes rather than a day off work.

When the router does have to change

The honest answer is that it depends on the hardware, and it comes down to whether the box has the right socket:

  • Moving from FTTC or SOGEA to full fibre is the big one. Your connection stops arriving down the phone socket and starts arriving as an Ethernet cable from the ONT on the wall. A DSL-only router has nowhere to plug that in.
  • Routers with both a DSL port and an Ethernet WAN port can often be re-pointed to use the Ethernet side instead, so the same box carries on. Plenty of business routers can do this. Plenty of provider-supplied home hubs cannot.
  • Ageing kit is worth replacing on merit rather than out of necessity. A router that predates WiFi 6, or that is out of firmware support, is a security and performance problem regardless of who bills you. Old kit is a common reason a fast new connection somehow feels no faster, along with WiFi that was never set up properly.

Either route works with us. If your router is compatible and in good order, keep it. If it is not, we supply kit already configured, so it is plug in and go rather than an afternoon on hold.

The bit that catches people out: SOGEA has no dial tone

SOGEA gives you the same broadband as FTTC without an analogue phone service on the line. That is the point of it, and it is where the switch-off comes in. If you currently make calls over that line, moving to SOGEA or full fibre means calls have to move too, normally to a VoIP phone system that keeps your existing numbers.

It also means anything else quietly using that line for calls needs checking first, such as an alarm dialler, a lift phone or a card terminal. That is a genuine reason to plan a switch rather than just order one.

Why an "as is" switch is not always available any more

One caveat that is not about your router at all. There has been a UK-wide stop sell on Wholesale Line Rental since 5 September 2023, covering broadband products delivered over an analogue line. Where it applies, an affected service cannot simply be transferred to another provider exactly as it is. The move has to be onto a modern product such as SOGEA or full fibre.

In practice this is usually an improvement rather than a problem, because those products are cheaper to run and better, and legacy line rental has been rising sharply in any case. It does mean the answer to "can you just take it over as it is?" is occasionally no, and it is better to hear that up front. What to do next

Two things tell us almost everything: what your connection currently is, and what is written on the back of your router. Check whether the cable going into it is a thin phone-style lead in a small socket or a network cable in a wider one, and check whether there is a spare port marked WAN or Internet.
